Gunsmithing

Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a work piece advancing (or feeding) in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool. It covers a wide variety of different operations and machines, on scales from small individual parts to large, heavy-duty gang milling operations. It is one of the most commonly used processes in industry and machine shops today for machining parts to precise sizes and shapes.

We offer slide milling, barrel porting, and frame reductions as some of our services. Don’t see something, feel free to ask. We do custom projects all the time.

One Stop Shop

We here at Smith Outfitters offer these services but not all custom work is done in house. We have a network of other trusted businesses that we outsource your projects to that will treat them with the best care. We do this and offer these services so you can drop your firearms off at one shop and all the work gets done without you having to mail it out to multiple shops.

Pistol machine work by Middlebranch Machine in Canton, OH

Rifle machine work by ADCO Firearms in Sylvania, OH

  • If the barrel outer diameter is too small for a shoulder after the barrel is threaded, you need this service.  This service can only be added/ordered at the same time the barrel is in for threading. This is not a stand alone service.
  • This covers/includes cutting/crowning as well as threading. This service is for any AR15/AR10 barrel once it has been removed from the receiver, or any STRAIGHT(not tapered) barrel. AR barrels with the FSB in place are covered under this service/fee. This service also covers handgun barrels that need standard threads. that do NOT need to be extended. Threads will be concentric to the bore.  There are no custom thread length or crown options.  If you want the barrel shortened note length in the comment section. This service also covers stripped barrels of other varieties. If the barrel will not drop through a round hole with a diameter slightly larger than that of the barrel, we will not thread your barrel under this service. If sent as a complete upper, the Disassemble/Reassemble service is required as well. We do not thread where there are already threads(i.e. we wont thread a 10.5 barrel to 10.3). Gas port work is included when necessary. When barrels are cut, they are all measured from a closed bolt face as the only standard measurement we use. Turn around for this service is 5-7 business days.
  • We can not thread factory Glock barrels, they are too hard of a steel.
  • LMT MRP barrels do not meet the requirements for this service.  To thread an MRP barrel is $140.00.
  • SIG 516 barrels do not meet the requirements for this service.  To thread a SIG 516 barrel is $175.00.
  • This is NOT a standalone service.  It can ONLY be performed when we are threading your barrel.  We will NOT perform this service on a barrel we are not threading at the same time.
  • We will adapt your stripped barrel to accept our custom made collar for any of the Allen Engineering or OPS INC Suppressors. Price includes required contouring, 1 custom collar and threading.  This is a service we only offer together and will not perform on a barrel we did not thread.  Too many people are buying cheap ass barrels with off center threads so we no longer offer this contour as a stand alone service.  Special exceptions may be made quality barrels like DD, BCM, WOA, Noveske.
  • This is not a customizable service.  The lengths and dimensions are based on the math needed to mount the suppressor properly based on the length of the barrel.
  • OPS 12th = AEM5/AE30
  • If sending a barreled action the cost is $200.00
  • Price is for barrel only. If disassembly is required additional fees will apply. If you are sending a barrel to be shortened but not threaded; this is the service you want. This service is for barrels of any length, pistol or rifle. Price is increased $30 if the barrel is sent with the action attached or has a lug which would require the non AR threading service. An AR barrel with an FSB in place is $30, as is a standard shotgun barrel.  A barreled action or something like a SCAR requires the $60 service.  The crown shown here is the crown style you will receive, there are no other options for different crown styles.

The service/fee is for a single straight (not tapered)pin. Some of the larger bore calibers(.458 and such) do not allow enough room to safely pin gas blocks. The block will be aligned with the gas port, which is not always perfectly centered.  All you need to send is the barrel and gas block. You can send a complete upper, but a disassemble – reassemble fee may apply if the gas block is not accessible. If you include your barrel nut we will be happy to slide it on before pinning the gas block. Turn around is about a week

  • Attach a muzzle device permanently to bring the OAL to 16, or AWB Compliance. This is the pinning service only. This price does NOT include threading or the muzzle device. There are different rates for different devices so be sure to select the correct device below whether you are sending the device or buying from us.
  • Be sure to send your barrel nut if sending a barrel with a gas block.
  • We will NOT pin any device using a 13” URX 4 and a 13.9” barrel.
  • We do NOT pin any type of brake through any external threads(OPS/AE). We do NOT perm any titanium or aluminum muzzle devices.  We try to stock some of the more common options here.
  • If this is the only service on your order, turn around is 2-3 business days.
  • We remove the whole lug, or just the ears from the lug, and refinish.
  • Remove and clean up threads on a barrel that is threaded, previously had a muzzle device permanently attached. No need for disassembly of a complete upper. The device being removed will be destroyed, because we mill the device off instead of drilling the pins out. We do NOT remove soldered on devices. If your device is pressed on, then you will not need this service. You will instead need the Barrel Threading service, as well as any required disassemble/reassemble service.
  • We can replace broken index pins in your existing barrel, we do NOT install extensions. Due to POOR quality of some barrel extensions recently – some extensions are destroyed when the pins are broken. If we find we cannot replace the index pin, we will send it back on your dime without installing a new pin.
  • We shave down and repark your standard A2 FSB to fit under most Handguards. We do not offer this service for non standard, surface hardened, milled FSBs, such as those offered on DD and Ruger rifles. This service also includes shaving off of the bayonet lug. You must  remove the FSB from the barrel for this service. You will be charged $15 to remove the FSB if you send it attached to a barrel. Remember to send the pins if you are not sending the FSB w/the barrel.  If your handguard isn’t listed, select DD.  This is a functional/economical  service to get a pinned type gas block to fit under your handgaurds.  This is not artwork, and there will be visible sanding/machine marks in the metal. Turn around for this service is 3-5 business days.
  • This includes cutting/crowning as well as threading. This service is for standard bolt gun barreled actions – Remington 700 Winchester Model 70, etc.. Threads will be concentric to the bore. Threads are either standard .400 for pistol caliber or .600 for rifle caliber.  There are no custom thread length options.   Do NOT send the complete rifle – just send your barreled action without the stock, scope base, trigger and bolt. There is a $50 fee if we have to remove the trigger from your receiver.  If you want the barrel shortened note length in the comment section at checkout. When barrels are cut, they are all measured from a closed bolt face as the standard measurement.   If you send any firearm, you must include a copy of a photo ID. The address on the photo ID is the address where we will return ship the firearm. No exceptions.  Turn around time for this service is 7-10 business days.*There are some barrel/action combos that we can not do at this price.  Unfortunately we don’t know what they are until we see them.  There is a $60 upcharge for extra setup work for the odd ball barreled actions. There are also some we cannot do at all such as Ruger M77s, SKS, Mosin Nagants and others.
  • This includes cutting/crowning as well as threading.  Threads will be concentric to the bore. Do NOT send the complete rifle. – If you want the barrel shortened note length in the comment section at checkout. When barrels are cut, they are all measured from a closed bolt face as the only standard measurement we use.  Send just the barrel assembly. Do NOT send the barrel attached to the receiver.

  • SCAR barrels are too skinny and have no shoulder. If you want to install a muzzle device that requires timing we recommend this service.  This service includes a tapered shoulder added to mount/time muzzle devices. ADCO will ONLY install timed muzzle devices on SCAR barrels that have this shoulder.
  • 5.56 barrels will be threaded 1/2×28
  • 7.62 barrels will be threaded 5/8×24
